Lying in the middle of the largest expanse of sand on earth the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most amazing, sensitive and complex environments supporting a spectacle of wilderness and wildlife. Unique as one of the world’s few inland deltas, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species. The Okavango Delta offers a number of activities for the visitor; game viewing, birding and fishing are all on offer. One can experience this magical world of islands and waterways from land, air and water.
Highlights include the elusive Sitatunga antelope which has found refuge in this pristine wetland ecosystem, while birds such as the African fish eagle, Pel's fishing owl and many others provide a spectacular display.
Overnight: Abu Camp View iBrochure
Abu Camp offers Africa’s premier elephant interaction experience where you’ll have the opportunity to see the Okavango Delta through the eyes of the herd as they accompany you into the bush, and subtly make a case for the conservation of all elephants. The six luxury guest tents, with private plunge pools and viewing decks, peep out across a lagoon from under ancient fig trees. Game drives, guided walks, and mokoro and boat excursions reveal the many wonders of this wildlife-rich area. The Abu team delight in creating unique moments for guests, whether in the company of elephants or at night around a crackling campfire.
- INSIDER TIP -
Book a night under the stars in the Abu Star Bed. The king-sized bed on a raised platform is close to the elephant boma, so you’ll be lulled to sleep by the contented rumbling of the Abu herd below.
Maun is the starting point for most expeditions into the Okavango Delta and as a result, has developed into a bustling metropolis that is considered Botswana’s tourism capital. Area attractions include a renowned river boat that offers ‘booze cruises’ up and down the Thamalakane River, and the forest groves of the Maun Game Reserve.
Overnight: Maun Rest Camp
Set in a shady riverside garden Maun Rest Camp focuses on travelers looking for a self drive venue with spacious self drive campsites that have fireplaces and power points. The camp is situated on the banks of the Thamalakane. The camp's furnished tents are all carpeted and feature comfortable beds. Maun Rest Camp also offers free WI-FI access.
Khwai Community Area
The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.
Overnight: Khwai Guest House
Tucked in the heart of the friendly rural village of Khwai, at the doorstep of the Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Guest House opens the door to a true African experience, offering a pristine immersion into Botswana’s unique nature and culture. Welcoming guests in 6 en-suite bungalows, Khwai Guest House offers a cozy nest from which to experience the traditional lifestyle of this small community set among one of the most spectacular wilderness locations of Botswana.
Guests have the choice between being completely independent, making use of the communal cooking area and exploring this stunning destination on their own, or enjoying the homely restaurant and joining some of the many activities on offer: game drives for half a day or a full day in Moremi Game Reserve or in the Khwai concession, traditional dugout canoe (Mokoro) excursions on a channel bordering the game reserve, night drives, cultural tour and encounter of the Khwai community.
The Kwando-Linyanti river system is home to a series of private game reserves, known for their exotic animal species and luxury safari options. An abundance of wildlife roams freely between the woodland habitats, ancient floodplains and forests that make up these lush, unfenced reserves. The big game in this area increases dramatically during the dry season when the area hosts large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, giraffe and buffalo as well as the world’s highest density of elephant. Several packs of wild dog are found in the area and lion, leopard and cheetah are frequently sighted. Night drives allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.
