The clear blue skies contrast with the giant red dunes to make this one of the most scenic natural wonders of Africa and a photographer's heaven. This awe-inspiring destination is possibly Namibia's premier attraction, with its unique dunes rising to almost 400 metres-some of the highest in the world. These iconic dunes come alive in morning and evening light and draw photography enthusiasts from around the globe. Sossusvlei is home to a variety desert wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostrich and a variety of reptiles. Visitors can climb 'Big Daddy', one of Sossusvlei’s tallest dunes; explore Deadvlei, a white, salt, claypan dotted with ancient trees; or for the more extravagant, scenic flights and hot air ballooning are on offer, followed by a once-in-a-lifetime champagne breakfast amidst these majestic dunes.

This hike through the Klein Windhoek Valley offers magnificent views. In order to meet the wonderful natural environment you should plan an hour for this hike. You will get a good overview of Windhoek on the Hofmeyer hike. The highlight of the hike however are the aloes along the way. The Hofmeyer hike begins either in Sinclair or Uhland Street and ends at the junction of Orban and Anderson Street. You will walk through Buschland and experience one of the most unspoiled parts of Windhoek. Please ask our staff for more details about the Hofmeyer hike. We can also transport you to the starting point of the hike and pick you up again. This hike through the Klein Windhoek Valley offers magnificent views. Overnight: Sesriem Campsite

At the entry to Sossusvlei is Sesriem Canyon, At the foot of the gorge, which plunges down to 30 to 40 m, are pools that become replenished after good rains. Located perfectly at the entry to Sossusvlei inside the park gate is Sesriem Camping, right beside the gate into the desert and just a short drive from Sesriem Canyon where centuries of erosion have incised a narrow gorge about 1 km in length. It is perfect for campers who want to experience the beauty of the Namib Desert with the sun setting over the Elim dune then the stars emerging until they fill the sky above you and the clicking of the desert barking Geckos and distant howl of the Jackal. Sit by the fire and imagine what you will. After a good nights rest its up early (one hour before sunrise) for a drive to the sossusvleiwherer you can climb a sand dune and watch the colours change as the sun rises over the horizon slipping its morning warmth over the Namib desert dunes. Sesriem derives its name from the time when earlier pioneers tied six lengths of rawhide thongs (riem) together to draw water from the pools. Accommodation at Sesriem is provided in 24 campsites. Facilities found there include a gas station, convenience store and a secure parking area.

Fish River Hiking Trail

The Fish River Canyon was formed when the plates of the African continent split, and gradually deepened by the flow of water, over the course of hundreds of millions of years. Today, in the midst of rigged plains and mountains, travellers can look down into its depths and see the geological history of Namibia written in its layers. And for the brave and fit few, there is an opportunity to do one of the most challenging hikes in Africa - a gruelling five-day trail from Hobas to Ai-Ais.

Fish River Canyon

Carving out an epic rocky wonderland in the south of Namibia, the Fish River has created Africa’s largest and the world’s second largest canyon. Hot, dry and stony, the Fish River Canyon measures a whopping 160 kilometres in length, at times 27 kilometres in width and 550 metres in depth. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of this ancientgeological marvel draws visitors from around the globe. For those looking for adventure, the intense 85 kilometre Fish River Hiking Trail through1.5 billion years of geological history will definitely thrill avid adventure enthusiasts, and for visitors looking to relax, head over to the canyon's southern end to enjoy a soak in the mineral waters of the renowned hot springs of Ai-Ais, or take in the spectacularly scenic views from HobasRestcamp as well as numerous other viewpoints along its rim. Other popular activities include: scenic chartered flights, horse riding, nature drives and seasonal kayaking.

Gondwana Canyon Lodge Canyon Drive

The Gondwana Canyon Lodge Canyon Drive is an activity offered by the Gondwana Canyon Park which is located approximately 20 km from the Famous Fish River Canyon in Namibia. A knowledgeable guide takes guests in a 4x4 vehicle to the two major lookout points along the Fish River Canyon on an informative exploration of the fascinating geology of the area. The drive takes around three hours.

Dead Vlei

This ancient clay pan was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river that suddenly changed course, leaving the earth to dry up along with the trees it previously supported. So dry were the climatic conditions that the trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture so that today, 900 years later, they remain as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a photographer's dream.

Sand downer drive

Depart from Sossusvlei Lodge in the late afternoon on a leisurely drive on the Lodge's private reserve. Relax with a sundowner drink and experience the most spectacular sunsets in the Namib!

Elim Dune Drive

The guided nature walk starts at sunrise, departing from the Lodge and takes place on and around the spectacular Elim Dune Belt.

Our knowledgeable guides focus on the small things often overlooked – nocturnal animal tracks, plant species and smaller wildlife.
