Set on the banks of the beautiful Thamalakane River in northern Botswana, Maun is the third largest town in this spectacularly scenic southern African country. Maun is the starting point for most expeditions into the Okavango Delta and as a result, has developed into a bustling metropolis that is considered Botswana’s tourism capital. Area attractions include a renowned riverboat that offers cruises up and down the Thamalakane River; the forest groves of the Maun Game Reserve; and Moremi Game Reserve, home to hippos, lions and rhinos. Maun also serves as the jumping off point for many safaris and air charters as well as offers 4x4 rentals. Don’t miss the Nhabe Museum exhibiting the local history, art and culture of the Ngamiland region.
10 km out of Maun, the gateway to the Okavango, overlooking the hippo pool is The Old Bridge Backpackers. This venue is a “Backpackers” in the sense that it has been created with an understanding of people who choose to travel independently rather than pre-booking package tours. The Bridge provides a comfortable base from which you can enjoy the varied amazing sites and activities that this region has to offer. We have a limited number of campsites for travelers with their own tents, a few of which are drive in sites. There is one site for larger groups. We have 10 furnished tents made up as either doubles or twins. Our 5 riverside tents have en-suite facilities. The 5 tents without en-suite facilities are set back from the riverside.
We have recently taken over management of the nearby “Maun Rest Camp” in order to expand our campsite capability. Through this development we are now able to offer ample campsites and drive in sites along the river. “Maun Rest Camp” does not have a bar or restaurant but guests staying there who wish to have use of such facilities may use a free motor boat ferry service to cross the river. Details can be found at Maun Restcamp. Our kitchen opens at 7 in the morning and closes at 8:30 at night and serves good value meals for all tastes. For those who prefer to self-cater there is a convenient and fully equipped kitchen, lounge. We have a popular and sometimes festive bar set between old, weathered lead-wood logs. Evenings are dimly lit with good music floating through the air (the bar closes at 10pm). You will always find a fire on a cold winters night and a cosy TV lounge that may be used on request.
Situated between the main building and the campsites you find open air hot showers and flush toilets built entirely out of natural materials. They are always kept spotlessly clean. Our friendly staff, who we consider to be our biggest asset, will ensure that you have nothing but fond memories to take home with you. We run a variety of activities that one can do in Maun, and run Safaris to all the Wildlife Parks in the area. We are also happy to give good advice to those of you with your own transport.
Enjoy the African bush veldt and the Zambezi River riding along the riverbanks on the back of a horse. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice it is a very pleasant and peaceful way to see game and enjoy the birds and the ride. Animals are less disturbed by a person on a horse and it is quite possible to watch game at very close quarters (sightings are not guaranteed). Experienced guides lead these trails and riders are put with friends or groups of similar riding abilities.
Situated in Maun, Botswana, the Moremi Air Maun offers visitors a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta. Various animals can be seen on the flight including hippopotamus in the waterways as well as elephant and buffalo in the shade of the trees. Visitors can observe how the water channels meander their way through the Delta in ever changing paths.
Angle Zambia provides fishing excursions on the Zambezi River upriver from the Victoria Falls. Experienced guides will take the guest to the best fishing areas where over 75 species of fish lurk in the waters of the mighty Zambezi. One of these fish is rated by many anglers as “the finest sporting and fighting fish in the world” – the renowned Tiger Fish. A variety of wildlife may also be viewed along the river.

Within the Chobe National Park, Savuti is perhaps one of the best known game-viewing areas in the country. Under ideal conditions the number and variety of animals seen can be quite staggering.
The Savuti area supports mainly Camelthorn (Acacia erioloba) sandveld, Silver Terminalia (Terminalia sericea) sandveld, scrub savanna, and mopane veld. Savuti's almost desert-like landscape with a scorching sun, loose, hot sand, animals escaping the heat by clumping together in the limited available shade, and elephants impatiently lining up to get to the ever-dwindling water supply, offer a wildlife experience so different, yet so true to Africa. It is almost impossible to imagine that this desolate, harsh landscape was once submerged beneath an enormous inland sea. Geologically the five main features of Savuti (namely the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge, the Mababe Depression, the Savuti Marsh with its dead trees, the Rocky Outcrops, and the Savuti Channel) are all intricately linked in the most fascinating manner.
