Resting at the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean, sandwiched between the slopes of the iconic Table Mountain and the glistening sapphire waters of Table Bay, the exceptionally scenic city of Cape Town is in a class of its own. Some cities boast rich culture, vibrant nightlife, a cosmopolitan atmosphere and extraordinary architecture, while others boast breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary natural wonders. Cape Town is lucky enough to be blessed with all of these attractions and so much more. With its bustling harbour, world-class beaches, top-notch vineyards, and its mountainous surroundings brimming with diverse flora and fauna, Cape Town consistently captivates the hearts of all who visit.
On the lower slopes of Table Mountain, the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens showcases some of the Cape’s rich flora. Taking centre stage here is the unique ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Those who work up an appetite while exploring this garden paradise can visit the restaurant or tea room, which are fully stocked with delicious meals, yummy treats and refreshing beverages. In summer, Sunday music concerts provide sunset entertainment. Kirstenbosch is rated as the seventh best of its kind in the world.
See Above
The Cape Peninsula offers a spectacular combination of beaches and mountains, with wonderfully well preserved areas interspersed with quaint towns and harbours.
The Cederberg is wild, rugged, dramatic and above all, breathtakingly beautiful. The region’s valleys are lined with citrus orchards and surrounded by magnificent mountains that become even more spectacular at sunset, when they are bathed in vivid colours. Hiking, bouldering and rock-climbing are popular pursuits in this beautiful natural wilderness, which also affords visitors opportunities to swim in crystal clear rock pools, discover ancient rock art, or marvel at the biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.
Ceres is fruit country. This fertile valley is the biggest producer of deciduous fruit in South Africa. Along the Ceres Fruit Route, visitors can tour orchards and fruit-packing houses. The Dwars River, which flows through the town of Ceres, is great for trout fishing. Ceres is surrounded by mountains and only accessible via mountain passes. The mountains offer various hikes and walks and in winter, the higher mountains are sometimes coated with white.
Composed of the Great and Little Karoo, this vast semi-desert region may seem harsh and unforgiving to some, but to others it’s a sanctuary of peace and silence with its own unique, compelling beauty. Extending across 400 000 square kilometres of the country, the Karoo is South Africa’s biggest ecosystem and its arid scrublands shelter a surprisingly rich diversity of plant, bird and animal life. Highlights of the area are the fossil trail in the Karoo National Park and the annual Olive Festival in the small town of Prince Albert.
The arid plains of the Karoo and the mountain ranges of the Roggeveld Escarpment, Cederberg and Klein Roggeveld Mountains, form the setting of the Tankwa Karoo National Park. The park’s position in the Succulent Karoo Biome ensures a diversity of plants, including an array of rare and endemic species. Rich birdlife and a range of interesting creatures, including tortoise, gemsbok, red hartebeest and mongoose, inhabit the area. This remote, special place is even more beautiful by night, when stars stud the black sky and add to the light of the glowing moon.
